Hey friends! Welcome.

This is the first issue of Echoes of Formosa — a Friday newsletter about Taiwan, written for anyone curious enough to want more than a checklist. Whether you found me through Facebook, Threads, or a friend who forwarded this — thank you for crossing over.

Before we get into the stories, let me tell you why this newsletter exists.

🗺️ WHY: The Soul of the Name

Four centuries ago, European explorers caught their first glimpse of this verdant island and exclaimed, "Ilha Formosa!" — the Beautiful Island.

But true beauty isn't just in the scenery; it's hidden in the echoes of history that still resonate in our daily lives. I founded Echoes of Formosa to be your Deep Local Narrator, bringing these silent vibrations back to life.

I'm Ricky — a licensed English tour guide in training (sitting for the exam later this year), and a Deep Local Narrator with profound affection for this island. I read too much, walk too much, and have spent most of my life balancing Taipei with my parents' roots in Tainan. That balance is the lens through which I tell these stories.

🌊 WHAT: The Experience & The Emotional Connection

We take you beyond the neon lights and crowded night markets to decode the island's cultural DNA.

The Experience: We trace 17th-century maritime maps and listen to the silent prayers in ancient sanctuaries.

The Value: From the Wanhuang Temple and the Grand Matsu Temple (the palace of fallen royalty) in my mother's hometown of Tainan, to Dalongdong Baoan Temple in Taipei (a UNESCO-recognized masterpiece) — we reveal stories of resilience. These are not just local tales; they are woven into the grand tapestry of world maritime history, connecting Taiwan's soul to the rest of the world.

Our Promise: We don't just show you the map; we tell you the secrets hidden between the lines.

💬 HOW: Start the Conversation

Are you planning a deep-dive journey to Taiwan? Or simply curious about a specific historical mystery?

Contact me directly: This newsletter is an email, not a broadcast. Just hit reply — it comes straight to my inbox. You can also DM me on Facebook or Instagram.

Personalized Insights: Whether it's a cultural inquiry, a question about a place you visited, or a request for a curated Tales & Trails perspective — I'm here to bridge the gap between you and Taiwan's local heritage.

🕯️ WHEN: We Are Ready When You Are

History never sleeps, and neither does my passion for storytelling.

Every Friday. One story. Around 800 words. Read it on the MRT, with your morning coffee, or just before bed.

Themes rotate — 17th-century history one week, folk religion the next, street food the third, a quiet observation the fourth. Every story rooted in a real place you can still visit, eat at, or walk through.

Welcome to the journey.

Let's hear the echoes together. 🛕
